 2008-2009 Arts Commission Grant Applications Are Now Open

The Los Angeles County Arts Commission is now welcoming applications for
the 2008-09 Organizational Grant Program from nonprofit arts
organizations in Los Angeles County. All grant requests are now for
two-year awards. Awards will support activities that build artistic and
administrative capacity and enhance community access, taking place
between July 1, 2008 and June 30, 2010.

Application due dates are as follows:

-Wednesday, October 24, 2007: This deadline is for OGP III applicants;
organizations whose revenues for the last completed fiscal year were
more than $1.5 million.

-Wednesday, November 28, 2007: This deadline is for OGP 2.5 applicants;
organizations whose revenues for the last completed fiscal year were
between $500,000 and $1.5 million.

-Wednesday, November 14, 2007: This deadline is for OGP II applicants;
organizations whose revenues for the last completed fiscal year were
between $100,000 and $500,000.

-Wednesday, December 12, 2007: This deadline is for OGP I applicants;
organizations whose revenues for the last completed fiscal year were
under $100,000.

Applications Available for Puffin Foundation Artist Grant Awards

Deadline: December 30, 2007

The Puffin Foundation (
http://www.puffinfoundation.org/ ) makes
grants to emerging artists in the fields of art, music, theater,
dance, photography, and literature whose works due to their genre
and/or social philosophy might have difficulty being aired.

Grants from the Puffin Foundation can only be awarded to permanent
residents and citizens of the United States. U.S. citizens whose
projects encompass work in other countries are still eligible to
apply. The foundation does not have the means to fund
large film/documentary proposals, grants for travel, continuing
education, or the writing or publishing of books.

Average grant awards are $1,000 to $2,500 each.

Call for Visual Artists

 

 

Since 2003 LA Commons has been partnering with Mama’s Hot Tamales, and local MacArthur Park Organizations to work with local artists and core teams of youth artists (age 15-25) to create temporary works of public art that share the stories, challenges and dreams of the amazing people who live and work in MacArthur Park.  Several projects have utilized the trees and park space on

West Seventh Street
across from Mama’s Hot Tamales and have found it to be a highly visible, memorable and effective space for sharing the art.

We are now issuing an open call for visual artists who are interested in envisioning the design of this current round of work.  Artists will work with 5-10 Core Youth team artists, age 15-25, to collect stories through public workshops, interviews and historical research and then to conduct a design process and facilitate the creation of the art.

 

The role of the Lead Artist or Artists is to conceptualize the form and overall design of the installation; to lead weekly 2-4 hour workshops with the core youth arts team that focus on story-gathering, artistic skill building, design and creation of the art work.  Additionally, the Lead Artist participates in the installation of the work.  The Lead Artist work will be supported in the role by a project coordinator who assists in: curriculum development; outreach to recruit the youth arts team; coordination of the story-gathering process; and acquisition of the project supplies.

 

 The workshops will meet weekly on Friday afternoons from 3-6:00pm at CARECEN.

The project begins in late November 2007 and the artwork is scheduled to be installed in late March 2008. A stipend of $2000 will be paid to the Lead Artist.

 

Specifically, we are looking for artists who have:

           Knowledge of the social, physical and cultural issues with MacArthur Park

           Experience involving local community members in the creation of art work;

           An artistic portfolio that demonstrates qualification in chosen art form

           The ability to work as part of an artistic team focused on integrating multiple works into a coherent whole that makes excellent of the site.

Intern, Department of Contemporary Programs and Research, The Getty Research
Institute

The Department of Contemporary Programs and Research of the Getty Research
Institute is in need of a part-time intern to assist in research,
publication and administrative duties for an exhibition about the history of
video art in California, scheduled to open in March of 2008. The internship
includes art historical research, data entry, work with photographs and
video, and periodic correspondence with artists. The position is for one to
three days a week and is an unpaid internship. The ideal candidate will be
able to work until the show opens in March. Ideal candidates will have an
interest in or emphasis on the field of contemporary art and video.

LACE Ongoing Volunteer/Internship Opportunities (non-paid)

Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions (LACE), located in the heart of Hollywood, is
looking for gallery guide volunteers (non-paid). The gallery guide interacts directly with
the public and educates visitors about currentexhibitions and events. He/she provides
point of entry to adventurous contemporary art and ensures security of artwork and
quality of audience experience. He/she is involved in opening/closing procedures of
gallery and general gallery maintenance. This position requires excellent interpersonal and
verbal communication skills. Gallery hours are 12-6 pm Wednesday through Sunday and
12-9 pm on Fridays.

LACE also offers unpaid internships in the following areas: administrative assistant,
communication assistant, development assistant, program assistant, or gallery guide. We
ask that all interns work a minimum of 15 hours a week, preferably a minimum of 2 full-
time days

is comprised of the Mark Taper Forum, the Ahmanson Theatre, and the
Kirk Douglas Theatre, is seeking a Communications Associate. This
full-time, non-exempt position reports directly to the Director of
Donor Communications.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Manages details for institutional communications projects
including deadlines for Performances Magazine, Stage Whispers
newsletter, Annual Report, funders' credits, and other departmental
projects.
2. Assists with preliminary prospect research on sponsorship
prospects. Gathers and compiles this research as requested.
3. Coordinates website content on behalf of the Development
Department. This includes writing and revising development content,
maintaining updated donor lists on website, and posting event related
publicity materials.
4. Supports corporate sponsorship solicitation efforts with research,
correspondence, solicitation tracking, spreadsheets, and other needs
that arise.
5. Oversees files and manages administrative details for all sponsor

UCLA Live, the leading presenter of internationally renowned, dance,
music, theater and spoken word events in Southern California, is seeking
a Director of Education and Outreach(DEO). UCLA Live's current
education efforts include Design for Sharing, the Student Committee for
the Arts and on campus partnerships including master classes and
workshops.

Reporting directly to the Director of UCLA Performing Arts, the Director
of Education and Outreach is responsible for designing a comprehensive
program to serve all communities touched by UCLA Live's programming.
Working in collaboration with volunteers, the DEO works to enhance all
education programs to ensure they are consistent with the prestige and
quality of UCLA Live's current programming. The Director also
oversees fundraising activities and serves as the manager of the Design
for Sharing, the Student Committee for the Arts, and campus-wide
activities and communication.

POMONA COLLEGE

Pomona College, a highly-selective, coeducational, independent,
residential liberal arts college located in Claremont, California, 35
miles east of Los Angeles, seeks a Program Coordinator for the
Asian
American Resource Center (AARC). Pomona is one of seven, independent,
contiguous colleges (five undergraduate and two graduate) in Claremont
which share many resources and facilities including libraries,
network infrastructure, and counseling and health services.

The AARC provides programs and services that focus on Asian
American/Pacific Islander (AAPI) issues for a multicultural campus
community. The AARC Program Coordinator (PC) will be expected to work
closely with students to conceptualize and implement co-curricular
programs during the academic year. A primary programming focus this
year will be on community-based art in the Asian American and Pacific
Islander community. The PC also will be expected to help with more
general counseling and advising of students on matters including:
personal, academic, professional, and event planning issues.
Experience with sexism and gender roles training is preferred. The
work hours for the PC are flexible and will average about 20 hours per
week. The PC is expected to attend weekly AARC staff meetings and
retreats as well as attend monthly Pomona College Division of Student
Affairs meetings.

A successful candidate must have a bachelor's degree and significant
experience in creating and performing/displaying works of art that
cover genres that include but are not limited to: poetry, visual,
photographic, film, performance or literature. A successful candidate
will possess: strong interpersonal skills, the ability to work with
people from diverse backgrounds, in-depth knowledge of AAPI issues,
experience advising AAPI students and a familiarity with Asian
American Studies. The PC must be resourceful, organized,
detail-oriented and work well in team environments. Previous
experiences in an arts-related field within the AAPI community are a
plus.
